When is Ashura 2027?

Tuesday 15 June 2027

10 Muharram 1449 AH· in 244 days

Expected date on the Umm al-Qura calendar. Many communities confirm the month by sighting the new moon, so Ashura can fall a day later where you live; your local mosque or national moon-sighting committee announces it.

Ashura is the 10th of Muharram. When the Prophet Muhammad arrived in Madinah he found the Jewish community fasting on this day to mark the day Moses was saved; he said Muslims had more right to Moses, and fasted it and told others to fast (Sahih al-Bukhari 2004). Once fasting in Ramadan became obligatory, the Ashura fast became voluntary (Sahih al-Bukhari 2001).

A hadith in Sahih Muslim (1162) describes fasting Ashura as expiating the sins of the previous year. The Prophet also said that if he lived to the next year he would fast the 9th as well (Sahih Muslim 1134), so many Muslims fast the 9th and 10th together.

For Shia Muslims, Ashura is also a day of mourning for Husayn ibn Ali, the Prophet's grandson, who was killed at Karbala on 10 Muharram 61 AH (680 CE).

Questions about Ashura

Should I fast on the 9th or the 10th of Muharram?

The day of Ashura itself is the 10th. Because the Prophet said he would also fast the 9th (Sahih Muslim 1134), many Muslims fast both days. Each fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib at your own location.

Is fasting on Ashura obligatory?

No. It was the fast the Prophet ordered before Ramadan was prescribed; after that it became voluntary, for anyone who wishes to keep it (Sahih al-Bukhari 2001).
