Praying in Galway

Galway's night prayer stretches almost to midnight in June: Isha does not start until 11:29 PM on 22 June, a day after the solstice on 21 June. The sky never gets properly dark, so the Moonsighting Committee convention used for Irish pages places Isha very late and Fajr very early.

That is why the summer night here feels so short. Fajr can arrive at 3:07 AM on 19 June, and in midwinter it slides to 7:09 AM on 1 January. Between those two mornings the clocks go forward on 28 March and back on 31 October, which shifts every prayer by an hour on those days.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Isha latest on 22 June in Galway and not on the solstice?

The solstice is 21 June, but the latest Isha, 11:29 PM, lands on 22 June. The convention follows the twilight, and at this latitude it can run a day past the solstice before it turns back.

Which Asr time is highlighted for Galway?

The Standard time, when an object's shadow equals its height. The Hanafi time comes later in the afternoon because it waits for the shadow to reach twice the height. Use the switch near the timetable if you follow Hanafi; your choice carries over to other cities.

Which direction is the Qibla in Galway?

Face 111 degrees, measured clockwise from true north, which is east-south-east. Makkah lies far to the south-east of Ireland. If you use a compass, check whether it points to magnetic or true north before you set the bearing.

How late does Fajr get in Galway in winter?

Fajr is at its latest on 1 January, at 7:09 AM. The clocks are on winter time then; once they go forward on 28 March, every time on the clock moves an hour later.
