Praying in London
Isha in London is earliest not on the shortest day of the year but in early December: 5:28 PM on 3 December in 2027, more than two weeks before the winter solstice. By midsummer it has moved to 10:42 PM on 21 June, and Fajr arrives as early as 2:43 AM on 20 June, leaving only a few hours between the night prayer and dawn.
That swing comes from London's latitude, 51.5 degrees north, where twilight never fully fades in late June. UK pages follow the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide convention, which sets Fajr and Isha from seasonal twilight rather than one fixed sun angle. The longest stretch from Fajr to Maghrib is 18h 42m on 21 June; in December it shrinks to 9h 34m.

How these times are calculated
- Method
- Moonsighting Committee Worldwide
- Fajr
- 18° with seasonal adjustment
- Isha
- seasonal twilight (shafaq)
- Highlighted Asr
- Hanafi (shadow twice the length)
UK times use the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method. In summer, cities above 55 degrees north, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule for Fajr and Isha because true twilight never ends there. Dhuhr is shown 5 minutes after solar noon and Maghrib 3 minutes after sunset, following the method's guidance.
Frequently asked questions
How short is the night between Isha and Fajr in London in June?
Isha reaches 10:42 PM on 21 June, and the earliest Fajr of the year, 2:43 AM, falls the day before. That leaves only about four hours from the start of Isha to the start of Fajr around midsummer, a far tighter night than in winter.
Which direction is the Qibla from London?
The Qibla from London is at a bearing of 119 degrees, measured clockwise from true north, which points roughly south-east towards the Kaaba in Makkah. A phone compass shows magnetic north, which differs slightly from true north, so allow for a small correction when you line up your prayer mat.
Why does the London timetable highlight the later Asr time?
Two schools of thought set Asr differently. The Standard view begins it when an object's shadow equals its length plus the noon shadow; the Hanafi view waits for twice the length, which comes later in the afternoon. UK pages highlight the Hanafi time, and a toggle above the timetable lets you switch.
How many mosques are there in London?
OpenStreetMap lists 190 mosques within 15 km of the city centre, and the closest are shown on this page with their distance. The map is maintained by volunteers, so smaller prayer rooms may be missing. Check each mosque's own timetable for congregation times, which can differ from the calculated start times.
