Praying in Glasgow
In June the sun at Glasgow's latitude, 55.9 degrees north, never drops far enough below the horizon for the usual twilight angles to be reached. So Fajr and Isha here are set by one rule all year round: the night is divided into seven parts, Isha comes after the first and Fajr before the last.
The shortage of true darkness shows in the summer figures, with Isha as late as 11:02 PM on 22 June. The fast itself swings from 18h 34m on 22 June to 8h 45m on 23 December, less than half as long.

How these times are calculated
- Method
- Moonsighting Committee Worldwide
- Fajr
- 18° with seasonal adjustment
- Isha
- seasonal twilight (shafaq)
- Highlighted Asr
- Hanafi (shadow twice the length)
UK times use the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method. In summer, cities above 55 degrees north, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule for Fajr and Isha because true twilight never ends there. Dhuhr is shown 5 minutes after solar noon and Maghrib 3 minutes after sunset, following the method's guidance.
Glasgow is above 55° north, so Fajr and Isha follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule recommended by the Moonsighting Committee.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Glasgow use one-seventh of the night for Fajr and Isha?
Glasgow's summer sky never gets dark enough for the twilight angles used further south. Dividing the night into sevenths gives usable times instead. The rule applies every day of the year here, not just in summer, and some mosques may publish different times.
Why are there two Asr times for Glasgow?
Asr starts when an object's shadow reaches one length in the earlier view and twice that length in the later, Hanafi one. This site shows both and highlights the Hanafi time for the UK. A switch on the page changes the highlight, and your congregation's timetable has the final say.
How late does Isha get in Glasgow in summer?
Isha is as late as 11:02 PM on 22 June, which is also the day of the longest fast. Fajr, meanwhile, can be as early as 3:36 AM on 12 June, so the night is very short.
How short is the winter fast in Glasgow?
The shortest stretch from Fajr to Maghrib is 8h 45m, on 23 December. Fajr is not until 7:05 AM on 30 December, and the sun sets early, so the fasting day is less than half its June length.
