Praying in Edinburgh

Edinburgh's June nights are so short that evening twilight runs almost straight into the morning's, which is why Fajr and Isha here use the one-seventh of the night rule on every day of the year. Isha closes the first seventh of the night and Fajr opens the last. The latitude is 56 degrees north.

Winter mornings stay dark late. Fajr is as late as 7:01 AM on 1 January and the fasting day is just 8h 45m on 17 December, but by 20 June the fast has more than doubled to 18h 35m.

UK times use the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method. In summer, cities above 55 degrees north, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule for Fajr and Isha because true twilight never ends there. Dhuhr is shown 5 minutes after solar noon and Maghrib 3 minutes after sunset, following the method's guidance.

Edinburgh is above 55° north, so Fajr and Isha follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule recommended by the Moonsighting Committee.

Frequently asked questions

What does the one-seventh of the night rule mean for Isha in Edinburgh?

In summer the night is short, so one-seventh of it is a short span too. Isha starts when the first seventh has passed after sunset, which is how it can reach 10:58 PM on 21 June. In winter the same rule gives an earlier evening time.

Do I have to adjust Edinburgh Salah times when the clocks change?

No. The timetable is already adjusted. British Summer Time begins on 28 March and ends on 31 October in 2027, and each prayer is shown in the local clock time for its date. The only risk is an old printed timetable from the other half of the year.

When is Fajr earliest in Edinburgh?

Fajr reaches 3:31 AM on 14 June, ahead of the longest fast on 20 June. From then on it creeps later each morning, even though the days are still near their longest.

Why is Fajr latest at New Year in Edinburgh?

Sunrise keeps getting later for a couple of weeks after the shortest fast, on 17 December. Fajr reaches its latest, 7:01 AM, on 1 January, and then starts moving back. So the darkest mornings come after the shortest fast, not on it.
