Praying in Cardiff
Cardiff's summer nights are brief. Isha is as late as 10:55 PM on 22 June and Fajr as early as 2:56 AM on 18 June, which leaves around four hours between the two. At 51.5 degrees north the sun does not sink far below the horizon in midsummer, and twilight holds on late.
British Summer Time, from 28 March to 31 October, puts the clocks an hour ahead for all of that stretch, pushing summer prayer times later still. In midwinter the fasting day is 9h 34m on 24 December, so the year's fast ranges from roughly nine and a half hours to over eighteen.

How these times are calculated
- Method
- Moonsighting Committee Worldwide
- Fajr
- 18° with seasonal adjustment
- Isha
- seasonal twilight (shafaq)
- Highlighted Asr
- Hanafi (shadow twice the length)
UK times use the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method. In summer, cities above 55 degrees north, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule for Fajr and Isha because true twilight never ends there. Dhuhr is shown 5 minutes after solar noon and Maghrib 3 minutes after sunset, following the method's guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch between Hanafi and Standard Asr on the Cardiff page?
Yes. Cardiff shows both times and highlights Hanafi, which is the later of the two. A switch on the page changes which one is highlighted, and the choice carries over to other city pages. If you pray in congregation, follow your own mosque's published time.
Which way is the Qibla from Cardiff?
Cardiff's Qibla is 116 degrees from true north, going clockwise. That is between east and south-east, a little closer to south-east. The bearing comes from the shortest path over the globe, so on a flat map it can seem to point too far south.
Why do the longest fast and the latest Isha fall on different days in Cardiff?
They peak a day apart: the longest Fajr-to-Maghrib stretch, 18h 41m, is on 21 June, and the latest Isha is on 22 June. Fajr is earliest on 18 June, so all three summer extremes fall within five days of each other.
How dark are winter mornings in Cardiff?
The latest Fajr is 6:37 AM on 1 January, when the clocks are on Greenwich Mean Time. The fast is shortest, 9h 34m, on 24 December and Isha is earliest, 5:40 PM, on 4 December, so winter days are compact.
