Praying in Birmingham

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, and Birmingham's first fast, about 11h 10m from Fajr to Maghrib, is a little over half the 18h 54m of a day in late June. By the final days, around 8 March, the fast has grown to about 12h 58m as the days stretch out of winter.

British Summer Time starts on 28 March, after Ramadan is expected to have ended, so the whole month is kept on Greenwich Mean Time and no fast is interrupted by an hour shift. The contrast comes in summer, when Fajr can be as early as 2:44 AM on 19 June.

UK times use the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method. In summer, cities above 55 degrees north, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, follow the one-seventh-of-the-night rule for Fajr and Isha because true twilight never ends there. Dhuhr is shown 5 minutes after solar noon and Maghrib 3 minutes after sunset, following the method's guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Birmingham Salah times jump in late March and late October?

The clocks go forward on 28 March and back on 31 October in 2027. The sun has not moved, but every prayer shifts by an hour on the clock face. If you keep a printed timetable, check which side of those two dates it was made for.

Which direction is the Qibla in Birmingham?

Birmingham's Qibla bearing is 118 degrees, measured clockwise from true north. That points south-east, leaning toward east, along the shortest line over the Earth's surface to the Kaaba. A compass app set to true north is the easiest check, though a mosque's mihrab works too.

How many mosques are near Birmingham city centre?

The OpenStreetMap map lists 130 mosques within 15 km of the city centre. Volunteers edit that map, so a small prayer room may be absent and a listing may be out of date. Call ahead or look at a mosque's own timetable before travelling for congregational prayer.

Why is Isha earliest in early December and not at the shortest day in Birmingham?

The evening times bottom out before the solstice, with the earliest Isha at 5:30 PM on 6 December, while dawn keeps arriving later into January. The two effects meet on 19 December, when the Fajr-to-Maghrib stretch is shortest at 9h 24m, about two weeks after Isha's low.

How much longer is a June fast than a December fast in Birmingham?

About twice as long: 18h 54m on 23 June against 9h 24m on 19 December, a difference of nine and a half hours.
