Frequently asked questions

Why is Isha so late in Toronto in June?

Two things push it back. Evening twilight lasts longer around the summer solstice, so the sky takes more time to reach full darkness after sunset, and Ontario's clocks are an hour ahead for daylight saving. Together they bring Isha to 10:54 PM on 20 June, nearly five hours after its late-November low.

Why is Fajr earliest in mid-June and not on the longest day?

Solar noon in Toronto drifts slightly later each day through June, which pulls the whole morning later even while days keep lengthening. The result is that the earliest Fajr, 3:45 AM, falls on 13 June, about a week before the solstice, while the latest Isha waits until 20 June.

Which direction is the Qibla in Toronto?

Face 55 degrees clockwise from true north, a little north of north-east. Because the Earth is round, the shortest route to the Kaaba in Makkah leaves Ontario heading north-east, not south-east as a flat map suggests. Phone compasses use magnetic north, so check that true north is enabled.

Are there mosques near downtown Toronto?

Yes. OpenStreetMap lists 38 mosques within 15 km of the city centre, and the nearest are shown on this page with their distance. Volunteer map data misses some prayer spaces, particularly smaller ones, so ask locally and check each mosque's timetable for congregation times.
